Stronger Together: Families in Child Therapy

Hello from Sunray Child & Family Counselling Centre!

As a child and family therapist, I am constantly inspired by the resilience I see in the families I work with.  The definition of family can be broad but essentially, I mean the people with whom your child feels most connected to and upon whom your child relies for their day to day needs.  My core belief is that families have an incredible, innate power to heal. It’s a power that’s often overlooked when we’re focused on individual struggles, but it’s the very foundation of my practice. I believe in empowering families to support their loved ones effectively.

When a child or teen is struggling, it can feel like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s important that their needs are addressed and new ways of coping are learned.  However, I’ve seen time and time again that the most profound and lasting healing happens not in isolation, but within the secure, nurturing embrace of family.

The Family as a System of Healing

Think of a family as a mobile. When one part of it moves, every other part is affected. When a child is in distress, the whole family feels it. Similarly, when we work on healing, it makes a difference when I can involve the entire system.

My approach to therapy isn’t just about the child; it’s about the whole family. I offer services like play therapy, counselling for teen girls,  parent/caregiver counselling, and family therapy. By working together, we can address the unique needs of each child and strengthen your relationship. This connection is the bedrock of a child’s mental well-being and is what allows them to truly thrive.

Fostering Connection and Resilience

For many years, the focus of mental health has been on the individual. We’ve talked about self-care and personal coping skills, which are, of course, very important. But for children and youth, their well-being is deeply intertwined with their family connections. That’s why my services are designed to empower families toward connection, resilience, and healing.

It’s about helping you, as parents and caregivers, recognize your inherent strengths and abilities. You have the power to create a space where your child feels safe, seen, and understood—a space where their minds, hearts, and souls can meet.

I believe in the healing power of families and am here to walk alongside you on this journey. If you feel like your family could benefit from this collaborative approach, please reach out for a free 15-minute consultation through my website,
